Thomas Hardy's land is Dorset; he lived here for most of his life and it was the inspiration for most of his work

Hardy was born in 1840 at Higher Bockhampton in Dorset, England where the cottage may still be visted today.

The name 'Wessex' used for the home county of his characters-'a partly real, partly dream-country', comes from the ancient kingdom of central, southern and western England, and most of Hardy's stories are centred on 'South Wessex'-Dorset.

He was schooled in nearby Dorchester (Casterbridge). Unsurprisingly, as the countryside there, is as beautiful and compelling as any in England. He developed a love of nature and a sympathy for animals that stayed with him throughout his life. The influence of which is clearly shown in his writings. At 16 he was articled to an architect in Dorchester and could have become an accomplished architect if he had not chosen to concentrate on writing instead. He did live in London for five years before returning to his beloved Dorset.

Following the difficult reception of Jude the Obscure, he gave up writing novels and turned to poetry, which he had written since his youth, and produced a prodigious output during the last years of his life.
